It's time to up your game.

It’s time to up your game.

I’ve often asked myself, “What exactly does it mean to ‘up your game?'”
According to urban dictionary, ” A phrase that you say to someone when you want them to be better at what they’re doing.”
Another definition is “to improve your performance.”

Yes, I get that. Here’s the deal though.

According to Jason, “I’m doing okay at my job. I make decent money, I have a good team I work with. Yes, there are issues, but I deal with them. Why should I “up my game?” I’m doing fine.

I asked Jason what he was doing to continually train himself and improve his skills for his job.

“Every day is a training day. Are you kidding! I’m constantly under the gun and dealing with fire drills. If that’s not training I don’t know what is?”

Yes, you definitely learn from fire drills and being in reaction mode.
What skills improve from reaction mode?
I have found with myself, clients and Jason that strictly learning from reaction mode is a form of complacency. Would a basketball player “train” for the big championship by only playing pickup games? They can play a role but don’t really develop the foundation skills and tackle the bad habits that count when the job demands performance.

5 signs it’s time to up your game.

If you find yourself in any of these situations you might want to seriously look at ways to up your game.

You spend all your time in reaction mode. It’s one fire drill after another. As soon as one “crisis” is solved two more pop up. You can’t get ahead.

Activity fills your day leaving no time to do anything else. By the end of the day you’re exhausted. Your family life, social life suffer and sometimes you wonder if your mental health is now at risk.

You’ve been doing the same set of tasks so long you don’t know any other way. There hasn’t been any disruption in your approach since your big career move way back when, “ah the good times.” You don’t know what you don’t know and you certainly don’t know the next step.

You hear yourself saying, “I’m doing well and don’t need to up your game.” What professional (athlete) would get away with complacency like that? None.

You don’t set aside any time to work on yourself, your career, your business. Oops. Big mistake.
