How do you know if you don’t do your job well?

Why don't you do your job?

Why don’t you do your job?

Yes, we know. You are crazy busy. Busy can be good. However, do you know if you do your job effectively?
Most people are crazy busy and yet, do not do their job, let alone do their job effectively.
To do your job means you focus on those activities that most directly get results expected for your job. It is really quite simple. At least to say in a blog article. I find it is just a little more difficult to do in practice.

A quick story about Jason

Jason works for a small high tech company. His job requires him to act as GM of the operation. Manage day-to-day operations, sales, marketing, production, shipping, customer support, new product development, manage costs, all of it.

Jason found himself in the job unprepared. That’s okay, even good! However Jason spends most of time on marketing development. Jason avoids the other areas.  He doesn’t actively seek out assistance or help. Jason keeps putting off critical revenue generation activities. He has plans but does not execute.

What is going on with Jason?

  • Jason finds himself out of his comfort zone in most of his activities required in his job.
  • Jason’s values do not align with the company’s values that drive the goals and expectations.
  • Jason’s heart lies in other areas so he has a hard time making decisions about where to spend his time.
  • Jason feels trapped so spends his time on activities that catch his interest.
  • Jason get frustrated with the piling on of new activities from his boss and others.

However, the company Jason works for values growth: sales growth, profit growth and market growth. Jason values creativity and wants to work hands on with technology.

7 ways to tell if you don’t do your job

Take professional profile assessment learn about yourself. You don’t love your job. If you love it you look forward to doing your job every day.

Continuously learning to become more effective is not in your game plan. If you learn new aspects you learn how to do your job well and what exactly it entails.

You avoid improving your skills and knowledge in key areas of your job. You may have taken a class at some point, received a degree, acquired a certification. Very good! Do you have a plan to continuously improve today? You do your job well by continually improving your skills and knowledge about your job. Imagine an athlete or a musician who decides to stop practicing their skills. They did go to a camp once and got a certificate. Sounds odd doesn’t it? Professions and business roles are skills. That means developing skills through practice and knowledge.

Your activities do not lead directly to results expected in your job.  Your activities produce results. Do the activities you spend your time on produce results expected in your job? If you are unclear find out.

You are not clear about the results expected in your job. All jobs produce results affecting product or service delivery, add costs in overhead and make the company more efficient, or create more sales and revenue. In private companies your job is either a cost item or sales generation item. The details flow down from one of these two items. In the public domain, all jobs either produce and deliver services or make the delivery more efficient.

You do not know exactly your skill level, knowledge level, and execution ability for your job. Why not? Find out if you don’t know.

You don’t have a game plan you believe in.  Determine the steps to know your job well. Understand what drives your decisions, that is your values. Then put together a game plan, a program to get good at your job and move into continuous learning.
