The rafters could be saying:

“Wow! We almost died!”

OR

“Okay, next time we need to come into this rapid a little straighter.”

This assessment gives the person a chance to see themselves clearly:

Behavior patterns—natural and adaptive

Values, prioritized

Perception model—how we view the world
