Counselor Development: Let’s Talk Play Therapy!

Hosted by Dr. Afiya Burson and presented by Catherine Hallman.

Thursday, January 30,3:00 pm – 4:30 pm.

122 attendees.

Takeaways from the webinar

  1. Play therapy uses play language when a child (or adult) has difficulty describing their experiences.
  2. Association for Play Therapy is the professional body. Anna Freud and Virginia Axline developed the concepts to understand the underlying unconscious processes and non-directed child-centered therapy, respectively.
  3. Often in play therapy the person reverts to the time of trauma.
  4. Good for autism, ADHD, neurodivergency, oppositional behavior and more. “A 15 year old boy will tell you everything if you beat him in Fortnite!” Catherine Hallam.
  5.   Online play therapy can work well.
  6. Play therapy room can be built affordably.
  7. Be patient. It can take many sessions for a traumatized child to feel in control of their environment. Can go through periods of high repetition, no motion of the play, then slight movements, then acting out scenarios at different ages progressing through older ages until age appropriate.
  8. Informed consent to both parents and child with boundaries.
