Have you ever encountered a situation in which the conversation on the other side includes “I know” and “let me tell you?” meaning I know everything.
I certainly have. And disappointingly, it has included me.
Ironically, it was through a systematic use of 5 (I know everthing) attitudes that devastate leadership and I was sporting all 5
- I know how to plan. I’ve got an MBA after all.
- I know how to execute. I’ve run products, service groups, teams, organizations and companies and made a lot of money along the way.
- I know a lot. I’m well read, well connected.
- I know how to learn. I was in constant learning mode. I read a lot.
- I know how to fix it. I really can fix things.
The real issue was that I was closed down to learning new ways of learning, new approaches. I was focused on learning the same way I did previously. And worst of all I thought I could do it all.
To learn what I didn’t know meant eating some humble pie. Admitting what I figured out by myself wasn’t necessarily the best way.
To get rid of the phrase, “I know it,” translation, “I know everything,” opens new horizons of possibilities.
How do you get rid of “I know everything” attitudes?
“Dominate your life with Focus, Decision and Execution.”
