It's never good enough. What’s the point in the complaint, “it’s never good enough for you.”

When I coached, we set up drills to build control for the athletes. The sport? Competitive club ski racing. High speed, precise, on-the-edge, yet fluid skiing. A series of sprints. The various drills developed control. It took physical control and mental control. The athletes never complained that what they did was never good enough.

Why not?
And what’s this got to do with business?

Continuous improvement and an edge

They had continuous improvement and winning as goals. The goals were clearly NOT “making due.” Anything that would give them an edge was welcomed.
They wanted to do the best they could, to win, to get better, to improve. So, it was never good enough for them.
What’s up with with business managers and leaders? They seem to float along with good enough, making due, and being crazy busy.
Those in sales want an edge. Sometimes. Most seem crazy busy, yet in some ways complacent.
Is it ego, beliefs, attitudes? Or maybe their goals are not about achievement.
Maybe it is really about a focus on achievement and continually getting better. It is never good enough.

Excellent quotes focused on achievement

High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.
~Charles Kettering

Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement.
~W. Clement Stone

Never mistake activity for achievement.
~John Wooden

Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation.
~Robert H. Schuller

~Harold Taylor

Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.
~Zig Ziglar

Questions to ask yourself about never good enough

How are you at leadership, delegating, setting a direction for your company, for your group, for yourself?

Are you a good communicator, collaborator, contributor? How do you know?

How are you at execution and holding people accountable?

Are you a good listener?

All these questions point to areas that even the best in their professions and business continue to work on and improve.
So…rather than “it’s never good enough for you,” try, “Where can can I do better?”
